Year in Review

I'm not sure what I can say about 2013. It was most certainly a year of growth both photographically and personally. I moved back back out to Michigan after living at my parents home for 7 months. I spent a week with my best friend in Ireland. I was a finalist for a handful of internships I wanted. I moved below the Mason-Dixon Line to a small town along the Mississippi.

I got a chance to spend time working on a personal project and photographing my family growing up. Ireland and Michigan gave me time to change my surrounding and to challenge myself. I want to keep working and improving each day and 2014 means 365 more opportunities.

On the river

Yesterday I got to spend some time on the Mississippi seeing the US Corp of Engineers laying concrete mats to help slow erosion. It was chilly but cathartic as well. A lit mist and gray sky made the whole shoot feel calm compared to my usually busy days.

Looking Back

Three years ago I was working as an intern for Lauren Greenfield. Two years ago I was about a fourth of the way through my internship at The Saginaw News. One year ago I was walking around the airport outside of Casablanca, Morocco. In about a week I will be a staff photographer for a community newspaper in Mississippi.

Three years ago I never would've guessed where I would be now. Of course I hoped for many things: to get a job right after my internship completed, to pay off a certain amount of my student loans, to travel the world, and most of all to get to continue photographing. I didn't get the job right away nor have I paid off anywhere near the amount of student loans I'd like to but I get to continue doing something that I love. How many people can say that about there jobs?

CD with images for a high school team

This wasn't my best shoot actually it was mediocre at best. I missed some great shots and didn't get what I was hoping to get yesterday. I promised the coach I would bring him a CD with images on it for him and that's when my day turned around. He was so thankful for the photos and the whole team was excited to see shots from their game. They appreciated that I was there and took an interest and that was such a great feeling. Not every shoot will be great and I'll miss more moments and I'll keep working to get better but today, after handing over the CD, it didn't feel like I had missed anything.

Community Carnival

Today I went and photographed a community carnival here in Muskegon. I'm working to change a bunch of my singles and I really want to have an organized chaos type of photo. I really admire photographers that can fit everything within the boundaries of their frame and keep it clean. I don't think I was successful today but hopefully next time.

Cleaniest mud run

While Driving

Everyday when I drive back into Muskegon on 31 I go past a school that always has beautiful light in the early evening. Yesterday there was a soccer game going on and I just had to stop.
